Pool safety: owner’s obligations

Since 1st January 2004, all newly built privately owned swimming pools, for individual or collective use, must be equipped with a safety device. Since 1st May 2004, this law also applies to existing pools in seasonal rental accommodation.

Since 1st January 2006, all swimming pool owners must respect these safety regulations.

The 4 approved standards are :
- pool fences (standards NF P90-306)
- pool covers (standards NF P90-308)
- pool enclosures (standards NF P90-309)
- pool alarms (standards NF P90-307)

Pools concerned :
Private outdoor pools for individual or collective use, with sunken or partly sunken structure:
- family pools or pools reserved for residents in accomodation
- holiday villages, hotels, holiday rentals, campsites, etc.

Pools not concerned :
- indoor pools
- above ground pools (inflatable or removable)
- public swimming pools with entry fee and which have permanent lifeguard surveillance.
